How to Access Home Support Services?

Across the world, we are witnessing an unprecedented demographic aging. By 2056, it is projected that 51% of the population in Quebec will be over 65 years old (Ministère de la Famille et des Aînés, 2012, p.10). The low birth rates following the baby boom era, combined with increased life expectancy, have contributed to this demographic trend.

Home Support Procedures

As a result, significant pressures will be placed on the healthcare system and community services to enable seniors to remain at home. More than ever, older adults will need guidance and support in navigating healthcare and social service institutions.

The Local Community Service Centre (CLSC) and the Integrated University Health and Social Services Centre (CIUSSS) in your region offer a variety of home support services, including:

  • Assessment of home adaptation needs
  • Rehabilitation services
  • Support for family caregivers
  • Home assistance services
  • Psychosocial services
  • Nursing and medical care
  • Loans of specialized equipment (grab bars, walkers, etc.)
  • Fall prevention programs

How to Access Home Support Services

To access these services, simply contact the home support access point in your region. Your doctor or hospital can also submit a service request on your behalf.

There may be a waiting period before services can be provided, as many users rely on CLSC resources. It is therefore advisable not to wait until the last minute to register with the home support access point. Once a request is submitted, it is possible to track the progress of your file.

The process of remaining at home can be challenging and exhausting for an older adult. It is recommended to provide assistance through a specialized company with experienced staff, supporting them throughout the process. Ultimately, the goal is to help the individual maintain their autonomy and continue living safely at home.
